5 Must-Haves in Your Wichita Backyard for Winter

Wichita Backyard for Winter

The arrival of winter doesn’t mean your backyard has to become a dormant, forgotten space. With a little planning and the right touches, you can create a custom home renovation for your outdoor space and transform your outdoor area into a cozy and inviting winter retreat.

Here are 5 “must-haves” to create a winter-friendly backyard in Wichita:

1. A Fire Feature:

  • Fire Pit: A classic for a reason! A fire pit provides warmth, ambiance, and a gathering place for friends and family. Choose from traditional wood-burning fire pits, gas fire pits for easy ignition, or even stylish fire bowls.
  • Outdoor Fireplace: For a more permanent and substantial option, consider an outdoor fireplace. It offers a grand focal point and can even double as a grill.
  • Fire Table: A stylish and functional option, a fire table combines the warmth of a fire pit with a convenient surface for drinks and snacks.

2. Cozy Seating Areas:

  • Outdoor Fireside Seating: Invest in comfortable and weather-resistant outdoor furniture designed for winter use. Consider deep seating options with plush cushions, sheepskin throws, and warm blankets.
  • Patio Heaters: Supplement the warmth from your fire feature with patio heaters. Choose from electric, propane, or natural gas options depending on your preferences and budget.
  • Create a Sheltered Nook: Utilize existing structures like pergolas or arbors to create a sheltered seating area. You can further enhance the coziness with outdoor curtains or a retractable awning.

3. Winter-Resistant Landscaping:

  • Evergreen Trees and Shrubs: Plant evergreen trees and shrubs like juniper, spruce, and holly for year-round color and visual interest.
  • Winter-Blooming Plants: Add pops of color with winter-blooming plants such as hellebores, pansies, and snowdrops.
  • Ornamental Grasses: Ornamental grasses provide visual texture and movement throughout the winter months.

4. Winter Container Gardening:

  • Embrace Hardy Plants: Choose hardy plants like kale, cabbage, and winter pansies for your winter containers.
  • Provide Protection: Protect your containers from extreme cold by wrapping them in burlap or moving them to a sheltered location.
  • Add Festive Touches: Decorate your containers with festive touches like ribbons, bows, or even miniature lights.

5. Outdoor Lighting:

  • String Lights: String lights create a magical ambiance and can be draped over trees, pergolas, or along pathways.
  • Lanterns: Place lanterns around your seating areas to provide soft, ambient lighting.
  • Solar-Powered Lights: Utilize solar-powered lights for pathway lighting or to illuminate garden features.

Creating a Winter-Friendly Backyard in Wichita: Additional Tips:

  • Clear Snow Regularly: Keep walkways and patios clear of snow to ensure safe access to your outdoor space.
  • Protect Your Plants: Protect delicate plants from harsh winter winds with burlap or frost blankets.
  • Enjoy the View: Don’t forget to simply enjoy the beauty of a winter wonderland from the comfort of your cozy backyard retreat.

By incorporating these elements, you can transform your Wichita backyard into a welcoming and enjoyable space throughout the winter months.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
