The Appeal of a Smarter Home in Wichita

Imagine a home that anticipates your needs, adjusts to your schedule, and gives you complete control from anywhere. That’s the promise of smart home technology. For Wichita families, these upgrades translate into:

  • Unmatched Convenience: Automate routine tasks like turning off lights, adjusting thermostats, or unlocking doors, freeing up valuable time.
  • Enhanced Security: Monitor your home remotely, receive alerts, and have peace of mind knowing your family and property are protected.
  • Significant Energy Savings: Optimize energy consumption, reduce waste, and lower your utility bills, a welcome benefit in Wichita’s varying climate.
  • Increased Comfort: Maintain ideal temperatures, create personalized lighting moods, and ensure your home is always welcoming.
  • Improved Home Value: Smart home features are increasingly attractive to potential buyers, adding a modern edge to your property.

Let’s dive into some of the most impactful smart home upgrades for Wichita families.

1. Smart Thermostats: Intelligent Climate Control

One of the most popular and impactful smart home renovation upgrades is the smart thermostat. These devices go far beyond simple programming, learning your family’s habits and optimizing your home’s heating and cooling.

  • Learning Capabilities: Many smart thermostats can “learn” your daily routines and temperature preferences, automatically adjusting settings to save energy when you’re away or asleep, and ensuring comfort when you’re home.
  • Remote Control: Control your home’s temperature from your smartphone, whether you’re at work, on vacation, or just in another room. This is particularly useful for pre-cooling your home before you arrive on a hot Wichita summer day or warming it up before returning from a chilly winter outing.
  • Energy Reports: Smart thermostats often provide detailed energy usage reports, allowing you to see where you’re consuming the most energy and identify areas for further savings. Some can even integrate with local utility programs to optimize usage during off-peak hours.
  • Geofencing: This feature uses your smartphone’s location to know when you leave and return, automatically adjusting the thermostat to an energy-saving mode when you’re away and back to your preferred temperature as you approach home.
  • Integration: Smart thermostats seamlessly integrate with other smart home devices and voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, allowing for hands-free control.

2. Smart Lighting Systems: Ambiance, Efficiency, and Security

Smart lighting offers far more than just turning lights on and off. It provides a dynamic way to enhance your home’s atmosphere, improve energy efficiency, and even bolster security.

  • Customizable Ambiance: Adjust brightness and color temperature to create the perfect mood for any occasion, from bright task lighting for cooking to warm, dim lighting for a relaxing evening.
  • Energy Efficiency: Schedule lights to turn off automatically when no one is in a room, dim lights to conserve energy, or use motion sensors to activate lighting only when needed. This significantly reduces wasted electricity.
  • Remote Control: Control your lights from anywhere using your smartphone. Forgot to turn off the lights before leaving for work? No problem. Want to make your home appear occupied while you’re on vacation? Easily done.
  • Security Integration: Smart lighting can be linked to your security system. For example, if a motion sensor is triggered, specific lights can flash to deter intruders.
  • Voice Control: Integrate with smart speakers for effortless voice control, adding another layer of convenience.
  • Tunable Lighting: Advanced systems can even mimic natural light patterns throughout the day, which can have circadian benefits for your well-being.

3. Smart Security Systems: Peace of Mind for Wichita Families

Home security has evolved beyond simple alarms. Smart security systems offer comprehensive protection, allowing you to monitor and control your home’s safety from anywhere.

  • Video Doorbells: See and speak to visitors from your smartphone, even when you’re not home. This enhances security by allowing you to screen callers and monitor package deliveries.
  • Smart Locks: Grant or deny access to your home remotely, create temporary access codes for guests or service providers, and receive notifications when doors are locked or unlocked.
  • Security Cameras: Indoor and outdoor cameras provide live video feeds and recorded footage, allowing you to monitor your property. Many systems offer intelligent alerts that can differentiate between people, animals, and vehicles.
  • Motion and Contact Sensors: Detect motion in specific areas or know when windows and doors are opened or closed.
  • Professional Monitoring: Many smart security systems offer optional 24/7 professional monitoring, providing an added layer of protection in case of an emergency.
  • Integration with Home Automation: Link your security system with other smart devices to create “scenes.” For instance, an “away” scene could automatically arm your alarm, lock doors, turn off lights, and adjust your thermostat.

4. Other Tech-Savvy Home Improvements for Convenience and Efficiency

Beyond the core systems, a multitude of other smart devices can enhance your Wichita home.

  • Smart Plugs: Turn any traditional appliance into a smart device. Control lamps, coffee makers, or fans remotely or put them on a schedule.
  • Smart Garage Door Openers: Open and close your garage door from your phone, receive alerts if it’s left open, and even allow temporary access for deliveries.
  • Smart Blinds/Shades: Motorized blinds and shades can be controlled remotely or programmed to adjust based on sunlight, privacy needs, or schedule, further enhancing energy efficiency.
  • Smart Appliances: Refrigerators that track inventory, ovens you can preheat remotely, and washing machines that notify you when a cycle is complete offer next-level convenience in the kitchen and laundry room.
  • Whole-Home Audio Systems: Stream music throughout your entire home or in specific zones, all controlled from your smartphone or a central hub.
  • Smart Sprinkler Systems: Optimize your lawn watering based on local weather forecasts, soil moisture, and plant type, saving water and keeping your lawn healthy.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I grew up around construction, remodeling, maintenance and all of that, my dad was one of those fix anything types and so we never called someone to come work on the house. I also was able to tag along with my dad when he had a job of his own to complete that had to do with construction or remodel or repair. Throughout high school and college I worked in the trades doing everything from carpentry to concrete in both residential and commercial applications. I also ran my own cabinet shop while in high school and college and knew that I wanted to work for myself and go out on my own in business, I graduated with a Bachelors of science in business administration and small busienss management in 2014. I met my wife Danielle while working maintenance for our churches summer camp, Danielle and her family were all from Wichita Kansas. After graduation I married Danielle and we moved to Wichita Kansas to start our own journey. I started Wichita Home works in 2015 with just one main floor kitchen remodel and one guy doing the work, it went very well and the rest is history. We built some key relationships along the way while learning and building wichita home works, we spun off quite a few businesses and divisions such as Integrity trade services, and complete concrete solutions, mainly out of necessity. We found it increasingly difficult to find trades that would live up to our high expectations and therefore we decided to do it ourself.
